Primula japonica
Candelabra Primrose
You may have noticed these charming flowers along the Arboretum's Primrose Path. The foliage grows low to the ground, and in spring, flowers are borne on stalks that rise a foot or more above the leave, giving the plant its common name of "candelabra." Flowers may be pink, white, or red. Cut back the stalks after flowering so that the plant can put its energy into storage for next year. The plant will die back over the winter, but new leaves will surprise you in early spring, sometimes even late winter.
